The Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorders Center at UHB offers state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment of memory and behavioral disorders associated with Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and vascular disease. The staff is expert at distinguishing memory changes resulting from these and other disorders from those associated with normal aging. We are experienced in the pharmacological treatment of memory impairment and in the management of secondary symptoms of dementia such as agitation, hallucinations, and sleep disorders

The goal of the Asthma Center of Excellence is to help the asthma patient to achieve symptom free asthma control. To accomplish this, we offer a comprehensive education and management program involving our special education staff and our pulmonary and allergy physicians. After completing the program, patients are referred back to their primary physicians with a written management plan which suggests lifestyle and treatment alternatives.

The Audiology program at SUNY is part of the Department of Otolaryngology and therefore has easy access to services provided by the Department and our affiliate hospitals throughout Brooklyn. Patients who need additional services can be easily referred to our other centers.
The Audiology Center provides audiological evaluation services to infants, children and adults. Services include evaluation of hearing and middle ear function, auditory brain stem testing, and electronystagmography. Overall services at all our affiliated hospital include evaluation of hearing in neonates, otoacoustic emissions testing, electrocochleography, electroneurography, and cochlear implant evaluation, surgery, mapping and follow-up. We also offer a large variety of therapy services including speech therapy services for head and neck cancer, neurologic disorders, head trauma, stroke, degenerative diseases, disorders of feeding, swallowing, fluency, speech, language, voice and the only auditory-verbal therapy program for hearing impaired children and adults in Brooklyn and Staten Island. We hope to expand the services at SUNY to include evaluation of neonates and hearing aid evaluation and dispensing in the near future.

BROOKLYN ALZHEIMERS DISEASE ASSISTANCE CENTER (BADAC)

One of nine designated centers in New York State, BADAC provides comprehensive neuropsychiatric assessment and treatment of memory disorders. Services include social services, activity group, family support group, home visits, and community educational activities. Patients have opportunities to participate in new clinical trials.

BROOKLYN CENTER FOR LIVER DISEASES

The Brooklyn Center for Liver Diseases is a referral facility comprised of a specialized interdisciplinary team of experts dedicated to the management of patients with various forms of liver and biliary diseases (viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, alcoholic liver disease, drug-induced liver injury, metabolic-based liver disease, cholestatic liver disease, autoimmune liver disease, gallstone disease and tumors.) The team members include specialists in Hepatology, Gastroenterology, Radiology, Oncology, Pathology, Nutrition, Vascular Surgery, and Transplantation.
The center provides a wide range of care utilizing state-of-the-art therapies and techniques for patients with liver disease. This includes among many, antiviral therapy for patients with chronic viral hepatitis, immunization against viral hepatitis, nutrition counseling, alcohol addiction services, chemoembolization, liver resections, variceal obliterative therapy (sclerotherapy, banding), transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt placement (TIPSS), surgical portosystemic shunts, and liver transplantation.

Kidney failurethe frequent end result of high blood pressure, diabetes, and inherited kidney diseasesis becoming more prevalent. More than 300,000 Americans are now supported by Medicare for regular kidney treatments. To meet the needs of Brooklyn residents, Downstate has opened a state-of-the-art hemodialysis facility at nearby Parkside Avenue. Providing peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, and general supportive care for children and adults with so-called end-stage renal disease (ESRD), the 20-station facility focuses on rehabilitation. Early return home and, where possible, hemodialysis at home, is a main theme of therapy.

DIABETIC TREATMENT CENTER (DTC)

The DTC on NS51 is an outpatient diabetes consultative service. It offers evaluation, development of treatment plans, and education of the diabetic patient. Primary care providers can refer patients for a consultation.

This unit functions as the emergency/urgi-care service area for the University Hospital. An attending physician and nursing personnel are available 24 hours, seven days a week. Patients may access the unit by coming to University Hospital, or by requesting an ambulance to bring them to University Hospital of Brooklyn Emergency Services.

The UHB Epilepsy Center is staffed with a team of dedicated specialists with expertise in epilepsy and other seizure disorders. We offer private practice office visits, an Epilepsy Clinic and Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, a highly specialized unit in which closed circuit television and EEG recording equipment are linked to computers which allow constant monitoring and tracking of patients behavior and electric brain wave patterns. We are currently the only center in Brooklyn to offer this type of monitoring.
We hope that through proper diagnosis and treatment we can help our patients regain their independence and improve their quality of life.

LASER VISION CORRECTION CENTER

SUNY Downstates Laser Vision Correction is optimally equipped to treat difficult refractive surgery cases in patients suffering from nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, as well as complications from previous surgeries. Using LASIK, the most advanced method of laser vision correction, surgery is performed on an outpatient basis with most patients returning to work within two days. Only patients who will benefit from surgery are treated. Screenings are free of charge, by appointment only.

LASERS IN UROLOGY, RECONSTRUCTIVE AND

Use of lasers to treat prostate obstructions, urethal strictures, bladder neck contraction, bladder tumors and various other urologic conditions.
Reconstuction of lower urinary tract following injuries or disease. Endoscopic evaluation and treatment of upper and lower urinary tract problems.
This center provides comprehensive care to all patients who have urinary tract stones. Once the diagnosis is established, the stone is treated utilizing a state-of-the-art lithotriptor that fragments the stone without the need for surgical procedures. For those patients in whom the lithotriptor is not appropriate, other techniques, such as a laser, are utilized to relieve the patient of the stone. Following this, a comprehensive medical evaluation is undertaken to determine if a cause for the stone can be found. Using this information the patient is given a preventive program with diet and/or medication to avoid the recurrence of a stone.
For erectile dysfunction and incontinence, a comprehensive evaluation and personalized treatment plans are offered.

The New York Headache Center is one of the few centers in our country dedicated to the treatment of headaches and facial pain. We have a staff of specialists in the fields of Neurology, Dentistry, Psychology, and Psychiatry. This broad range of specialists allows for the accurate diagnosis and treatment of headaches through the use of biofeedback, accupuncture, diet, medications and other means. Treatment is tailored specifically for each patient.

OSTEOPOROSIS DIAGNOSTIC CENTER

The Osteoporosis Diagnostic Center is a consultative service aimed at the early detection and prevention of osteoporosis. It is equipped with a Hologic QDR-2000plus x-ray bone densitometer which offers state-of-the art technology for the measurement of bone mineral density. A comprehensive review of each patient's medical history for the assessment of fracture risk is provided. A written evaluation outlining risks, interpretation of the bone density results, suggestions for lifestyle and dietary modifications and treatment alternatives is sent to both the referring physicians and the patient.

PAIN MANAGEMENT CENTER

The Department of Anesthesiology provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary outpatient pain management program utilizing physical treatment procedures such as nerve blocks, trigger point injections, pharmacotherapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation as well as psychological interventions such as relaxation training, hypnosis, cognitive behavior modification and individual therapy. An inpatient unit treats acute postoperative pain.
