In addition to his expertise in the field of kidney transplantation, Dr. Distant has initiated the technique of laporascopic donor nephrectomy for living donor transplantation at SUNY Downstate. Dr. Distant also initiated the use of the dual kidney transplant technique which allows the transplantation of kidneys from older donors which otherwise might not be used. Dr. Distant is the Director of Kidney Transplantation and his innovative leadership has allowed the division to move forward and flourish in the ever expanding field of transplantation.

Joon Ho Hong, M.D., PhD., Professor of Surgery
Dr. Hong has performed over a thousand transplants over the course of more than 20 years in kidney transplantation. In addition to being an expert transplant surgeon, Dr. Hong is a well recognized leader in arterio-venous access surgery for dialysis. Dr. Hong’s professional and academic expertise is recognized by both patients and colleagues alike.

Nabil B. Sumrani, M.D., Associate Professor of Surgery
Dr. Sumrani is an expert kidney transplant surgeon as well as director of the SUNY Downstate kidney-pancreas program. Dr. Sumrani is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of transplantation and has presented the results of his research studies to transplant colleagues around the world.
