RESEARCH
The Department of psychiatry has made huge gains in both biological and clinical research in the past five years. The Departments range of research includes neurobiology of alcoholism and its genetics, primate studies on attachment and anxiety, significant research in affective and mixed anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and geriatric psychiatry. Annual funding for research over the past two years has averaged over 14 million dollars per year with a large percentage generated by the neurodynamics lab and the infant and child learning center. Of the total research support, 60% comes from the NIH while the remainder comes from city, state, and private industry sectors. Over the past 18 months, the Department has had a significant growth in the clinical research programs, with several inpatient and outpatient clinical trials in progress. The faculty, over the past five years, has published over 250 scholarly works including abstracts, articles, and books. The volume of scholarly work is steadily increasing to include publications and presentations submitted by junior faculty, fellows and residents. Residents are encouraged to participate in these projects form their PGY-I and an opportunity to participate in a research elective is provided in the PGY-IV. These efforts have resulted in our residents being responsible for over 25 publications and presentations in peer reviewed journals and conferences.
