Established in 1984, the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry under the direction of Carl I. Cohen, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry, encompasses the Brooklyn Alzheimer's Disease Assistance Center, the Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic at Downstate Mental Hygiene Associates, the Center for Ethnic Studies, and Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship program.
The research program currently includes a NIH RO1 examining depression and anxiety disorders in Older African Americans, a collaborative a NIH SO1 with LIU examining older persons with schizophrenia, a study of rTMS in treatment resistant depression, research on dementia among African Americans and African Caribbeans, and a NIA grant with LIU to train minority researchers. The program also receives various service grants from NYS, NYC, and other sources.

The fellowship program is a one-year clinical program for PGY 5 residents. It is certified by the ACGME. There are a variety of clinical rotations including experiences in acute inpatient psychiatry at Kingsbrook Hospital and Island Medical Center, intermediate-care at Kingsboro Psychiatric Center, a long-term care(nursing home) at St. Albans Extended Care Facility, outpatient treatment at Downstate Mental Hygiene Associates, memory disorders at the Brooklyn Alzheimer's Disease Assistance Center(BADAC), home visits from BADAC, and community education at senior centers, churches, and community centers. Opportunities for research are also available. Since its inception in 1984, over 50 fellows have graduated from the program.
