Services
Project Liberty at Downstate strives to reach out and offer needed information, education and support to people at this time of crisis a time when it can make such a difference. We are here to provide these services to you, your family, your neighbors, your employees and your spiritual community.
When you call Project Liberty at Downstate, you will speak with a trained counselor. He or she will talk with you about your concerns, work with you to determine how to best meet your needs, offer choices, and assist you in finding the resources you need to recover. Whether you would like to find a grief support group in your neighborhood or arrange a brown bag luncheon discussion on stress with your work group, we can help you. Specifically, we provide individual and group crisis counseling, education, and referral services. All are aimed at helping each of us to cope in a healthy way and to return to our pre-disaster level of functioning.
Individual and Group Crisis Counseling Services Individually and in groups, counselors listen, provide emotional support, help survivors understand their reactions, explore options with survivors, and provide links to agencies for additional services, when indicated.
Education Services Educational efforts are both broad and focused. Broadly, educational information may be provided through brochures, flyers posted in public areas, and mailings or through public service announcements, newspaper articles and advertisements. Additionally, education is provided through training to human service personnel such as the clergy or teachers. Educational information may also be targeted to groups. As with crisis counseling, group education services do not focus on the sharing of experiences. Rather, the sessions are aimed at providing information to facilitate recovery.
Referrals Referrals may be necessary when survivors' needs cannot be met by short-term, relatively informal counseling and education sessions. Referrals will be made to appropriate agencies or licensed mental health professionals for those times survivors require mental health treatment and support. In addition, some disaster recovery needs may be more physical, structural or economical in nature. In such cases, referrals will be made to specific disaster service agencies.
We offer one-to-one or group sessions wherever you wish to have them in your home, school, business, office, or church. If your needs are more urgent, Project Liberty counselors will work with you to quickly find the support you need. Consider calling Project Liberty if you would like to arrange a program for your:
