Project Liberty at Downstate Mission Statement
The World Trade Center terrorist attacks of September 11 have affected us all - from the families and friends of those who died to the many thousands of New Yorkers who watched the towers fall over and over again on television.
As a result of the disaster, we have been facing hard times. These are times when reaching out to and supporting each other matters. Project Liberty at SUNY Downstate Medical Center is a program that provides free crisis counseling services to persons, families and groups that have been most affected by the September 11 World Trade Center disaster.
Sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Center for Mental Health Services, Project Liberty is being administered by the New York State Office of Mental Health. It is a collaborative effort of the Office of Mental Health, local governments and provider agencies such as SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
Project Liberty at Downstate offers one-to-one or group sessions wherever you wish to have them - in your home, school, business, office, or church. We reach out to disaster survivors in their own environments, to provide face-to-face crisis counseling and education services.
At a time of crisis, many people find it helpful to have someone who cares, someone who listens. This is what Project Liberty at Downstate does. Along with offering support, we also help disaster survivors to understand what is happening and how they are reacting. We help them to think about options and to find people or agencies that can assist with any disaster-related problems.
At the heart of all of the support activities of Project Liberty at SUNY Downstate Medical Center are the values of hope, respect, safety, excellence and recovery. At Project Liberty at Downstate, we strive to help people to cope and return to their pre-disaster levels of functioning.
To contact Project Liberty at SUNY Downstate Medical Center for individual or group crisis counseling, education services, or community outreach initiatives, please call (718) 270-2001. All calls and subsequent provision of Project Liberty services are completely confidential.
