 KINGS COUNTY HOSPITAL

CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRY

Division Chief:
Lenore Engel, MD

The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has a wide range of services for children, adolescents and their families. Most of these services are at our major affiliate, Kings County Hospital Center (KCHC). The inpatient service at KCHC has 3 units, one to treat children under age 12, and two adolescent inpatient units. The Outpatient Department, located at KCHC in J Building (corner of Albany and Winthrop) provides walk-in clinic services that allow for immediate assessment of children/adolescents. In addition, there is an active treatment clinic that is staffed by a multidisciplinary team with Child Psychiatrists on site at all times. There also is an Adolescent Day Treatment Program and a Developmental Evaluation Clinic at KCHC. The Adolescent Day Treatment Program is a five-day a week program that sees adolescents who are unable to succeed in a regular education setting. It addresses both their educational and emotional needs in this setting. This is a SIE 7 designated school. The Developmental Evaluation Clinic (DEC) evaluates and treats children/adolescents with developmental disabilities. This clinic is multidisciplinary and it includes child psychiatry, psychology, social work, speech and language therapy, and pediatric neurology services. The DEC clinic also provides Early Intervention evaluations. There is an Infant and Child Learning Program, run by Dr. Hittelman, which evaluates children with/or at risk for developmental problems; this child service is currently the only one based at SUNY. There is also a consultation liaison service that does consults for pediatric and adolescent patients who are hospitalized at KCHC or at SUNY. The Child Psychiatry service also runs a Child and Adolescent fellowship program.
