DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Overview:
Department of Preventive Medicine
and Community Health

The Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health of the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, is committed to educate students, conduct research in the broad disciplines of preventive medicine, health promotion, public health, and the health services, and to provide useful preventive services to the medical center's community. The department's goal with regard to medical student education is to enable students to learn the essentials of epidemiology, medical biostatistics, preventive medicine, population health, and public health, and the U.S. health care system, in order to prepare them for the practice of medicine. Through its elective programs, the department makes available to students a broad array of specific subject areas including international health, community medicine, clinical outcomes, health care quality improvement, etc.

In 2001, the department's Master of Public Health Program was approved by the SUNY Board of Trustees, the New York State Board of Regents, and the State Education Department. The first classes for the program began in June 2002 with the entry of twelve students. Since then the program has continuously grown and currently offers thirty-six courses over three semesters. In 2004, the program awarded its first MPH degrees and currently has an enrollment of a hundred and two students. In 2005, the Program received national accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) for a period of five years.

Downstate's Master of Public Health Program symbolizes a re-affirmation of commitment on behalf of the medical center to the people of Brooklyn. Through it, we hope to create an environment that will promote the health and quality of life of communities served by the medical center. The program is housed in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health whose faculty includes nationally respected leaders in public health who have distinguished themselves in their respective specialties through teaching, research and service. The program is also enriched by professionals from other departments of the College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the College of Health Related Professions, affiliated hospitals and institutions, and community based organizations.

The Department continues its active teaching activities in the College of Medicine and College of Health Related Professions. Its faculty are also involved in a variety of research and community service activities whose goals are to promote health and prevent illness.

The multiple activities of the department are detailed in other sections of this web site. We hope that this information will answer all of your questions. Please feel free to contact us if you need further information.
