Application Information
Thank you for your interest in the Pediatric Residency Program at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and congratulations on your decision to pursue graduate medical education in pediatrics.
As the core residency program of the Department of Pediatrics at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center (the Health Science Center at Brooklyn), a major, urban, academic medical center, we enjoy the challenges of being at the forefront of medicine and the satisfaction of contributing to the science and practice of pediatrics. In addition, we have the privilege of educating medical students and other health professionals and caring for a diverse, often needy and particularly interesting population. The S.U.N.Y. Downstate Medical Center has a great deal to offer to residents in its training programs through experiences at the Childrens Hospital at Downstate (at University Hospital of Brooklyn), Kings County Hospital Center, Staten Island Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital. Our program integrates an ideal spectrum of clinical environments and experiences: a tertiary care hospital, a large and busy municipal hospital, community hospitals (in Staten Island and Manhattan), and several ambulatory settings.
We are located in the center of Brooklyn, the most populous borough of the City of New York. Within its 70 square mile area there are a range of communities, diverse ethnic groups and socioeconomic conditions from the socially ravaged to the economically privileged living in million dollar homes. Brooklyn has an unparalleled mix of neighborhoods, nationalities, lifestyles, and recreational and cultural activities along with immediate access to the rest of the Big Apple and its suburbs.
The pediatric residency program participates in the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Only applications submitted through ERAS will be considered. We do not prescreen candidates, so all interested candidates are strongly encouraged to submit an application via ERAS. Details regarding ERAS should be obtained from your medical schools Deans Office or E.C.F.M.G. for International Medical Graduates.
Dates and Deadlines
Applications for the pediatric residency program (for all categorical, advanced and preliminary positions) are downloaded from ERAS beginning September 1 of each year. The deadline for initial submission of an application is December 31. Although interviews may be offered prior to receiving all application components, the application should contain all required supporting documents and be as complete as possible prior to any scheduled interview date. All required material must be received prior to finalization of the Programs rank order list in mid-February.
Interviews
Interview days are an essential part of the residency application/resident selection/program selection process. While the interview is required as part of your application, the interview day and visit to Downstate plays an even more important role in your selection of a residency training program. As such, most of the interview day is geared to personally introducing you to the program, answering your questions and giving you an opportunity to experience some of what we have to offer. Applicants selected for interview are determined based on careful screening of ERAS application materials received. Selected applicants will be invited (by email) for interviews to be held from November through January. Only invited and scheduled applicants will be interviewed.
