Nursing at SUNY Downstate Medical Center

Philosophy
We believe that Nursing Care delivered at University Hospital of Brooklyn must be safe, evidenced based and therapeutic, utilizing all necessary personnel, fiscal and environmental resources needed to deliver expert nursing care.We recognize the racial, ethnic and religious diversity of our patients, staff, and community. The provision of nursing care incorporates a holistic approach for the patient and family. The nursing process forms the framework for the implementation and evaluation of care within a collaborative model encompassing all health care disciplines. Our concept is simple.

We believe in

C.A.R.E.

C=Clinical
We believe our patients must be given expert clinical nursing care with kindness and compassion. Our nursing care is built upon a foundation of continuous performance improvement and patient safety. Our nurses provide clinical expertise to plan care based on the needs of each patient. We strive to create a compassionate and therapeutic environment that is responsive to the uniqueness of each patient and family.

A=Administrative
The activities which constitute patient care, must be effectively coordinated. Every member of the team is charged with leadership as a Patient Advocate. Our nursing staff works in a climate of mutual trust and camaraderie.

R=Research
We believe through clinical research, we will find new and more effective ways of caring for our patients. Nursing research validates the effectiveness and efficacy of our nursing care. Our Nursing Research Committee (a joint collaboration between the UHB Nursing Department and SUNY College of Nursing) focuses on clinical research at the bedside and its impact on patient care.

E=Education
Our hospital is located within an academic medical center. We believe that patients and their families should be informed of illness, wellness, and general health maintenance. Education is an essential part of our nurses' professional growth. We provide, encourage and financially support learning opportunities. Our nursing staff possesses specialty certification from American Nurses Credentialing Center, National Certification Corporation for Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties, Association of Rehabilitation Nurses, Association of Critical Care Nurses, Association of Operation Room Nurses, American Nephrology Nurse Association, Association of Emergency Nurses Association, American Radiological Nurses Association and the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation.
