We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit. - Aristotle (384 - 322 B.C.)

The University Hospital of Brooklyn is part of the only academic medical center in Brooklyn. Beginning in orientation and continuing throughout their professional careers, our nurses are part of a learning environment that develops their clinical and critical thinking skills in the evidence-based nursing management of diverse patients and families across the life span and healthcare continuum.
Orientation Program
Our new nurses participate in a competency-based orientation program designed to meet their individual learning needs. In partnership with a nurse educator and nurse manager, our Preceptorship program incorporates a variety of didactic, self-directed, and computer-assisted learning activities that facilitate learning and application of clinical and critical thinking skills at the bedside.
One of the outstanding features of our orientation program is the New Graduate Residency Program. The New Graduate Residency Program based on Benner's Novice-To-Expert Model, is a series of learning and work experiences designed to support new graduate nurses as they transition into their first professional position as direct care providers in an academic medical center. New graduates work with a mentor during their first year of employment. Mentors guide and support new graduates as they transition from student to professional nurse and begin their journey from novice to expert.
Continuing Education Program
To promote an environment of continuous learning, ongoing continuing education programs that support the professional development of our nurses are offered through the Institute of Continuous Learning. A variety of learning opportunities are designed to develop nurses' clinical and leadership skills and include programs in Critical Care, ECG Interpretation, Triage, Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring, and Cultural Diversity. We provide E learning programs endorsed by AACN for critical care orientation. Leadership development is offered through our association with The Advisory Board Academy. We are an approved provider of continuing education programs by New York State Nurses' Association.
