HUNDREDS BRAVE RAIN TO ATTEND SUNY DOWNSTATE’S ANNUAL HEALTH FAIR
Despite the weather, close to 500 residents of Central Brooklyn turned out for the 21st Annual Health Fair, sponsored by SUNY Downstate Medical Center’s University Hospital of Brooklyn. Held May 19 during National Hospital Week, the event was the highlight of a week-long celebration honoring the contributions of health professionals, who play such an important role in safeguarding the well-being of the community.
“Not even the rain could dampen the spirit of the community,” said Maria Yomtov, RN, executive chair of the National Hospital Week Organizing Committee. In addition to free screenings for cholesterol, diabetes, asthma, hearing and vision, health professionals were on hand to conduct clinical breast exams, Pap tests, and tests for pregnancy and HIV. The fair also offered live musical entertainment and fun-filled activities for members of the community.
This year’s theme“Care You Count On…People You Trust”sums up the special relationship between University Hospital and the community it serves. “It is our mission to be a leader in health education,” said nurse-educator Betty Jung, another key organizer. “Making access to quality health care possible through this annual event promotes a healthy community.”
SUNY Downstate Medical Center is the only academic medical center in Brooklyn, serving more than 2 million people throughout the borough. SUNY Downstate is located at 450 Clarkson Avenue.
