Admission Policy
The MPH Program is a part-time program that can be completed in four (4) semesters, and two (2) summer terms, plus the public health Culminating Experience (CE).

Admission Requirements:
Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.

Official transcripts from all previous postsecondary institution courses.

If you are applying for concurrent degrees in the College of Medicine, College of Nursing or College of Health Related Professions, then transcripts only need to be sent to those primary programs.

If you have completed all or part of your education abroad, you are required to have a course-by-course, educational credential evaluation completed by an approved agency. This evaluation must include a breakdown of each course by name, U.S. equivalent semester hours, and the corresponding letter grade.

Any evaluation agency that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) is acceptable. For additional information, consult the NACES website (http://www.naces.org) for a list of current members or contact the Office of Admissions.

Our entering classes are small and admission preference is given to New York State residents and to individuals who have completed their prerequisite courses in the United States.

An undergraduate record with a grade point average of 3.0 or better in the major course of study is preferred.

Appropriate completion of the MPH program application.

Letters of recommendation
—For students pursuing only the MPH degree: Two (2) letters of recommendation must be submitted addressing the applicant’s scholastic ability and professional experience or interest as it applies to public health issues.

—For students pursuing concurrent degrees: In addition to the required letters of recommendation for the primary program, applicants must submit one letter of recommendation unless the AMCAS or other primary program letters (or evaluations) speak directly to the applicant’s interest or experience in public health.

A graduate entrance examination is required for admission in the MPH Program. Graduate entrance examinations that will be accepted include the following:
•*Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Scores of 1100 or above preferred.
•Medical College Application Test (MCAT). Scores of 24 or above preferred.
•Law School Admission Test (LSAT). Scores of 150 or above preferred.
•Dental Admission Test (DAT). Scores of 17 or above preferred.
•Optometry Admission Test (OAT). Scores of 300 or above preferred.
*GRE Scores received within five years of application are required for admission.
For the applicant who has earned a degree higher than a master’s degree (e.g. PhD, MD, DO, DDS, etc.), graduate entrance examinations will be waived if official transcripts from an accredited school are submitted.

Proof of licensure must be submitted for licensed health professionals.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores are required of applicants from non-English speaking nations. A minimum score of 550 is required score for the paper exam of 564 and a minimum score for the computer exam of 180 is required on the TOEFL.

A $45 non-refundable application fee made payable to SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

Admission to the Concurrent Degree Program
Applicants for concurrent degrees with other programs in the medical center must apply to and be accepted by each program. Students applying for concurrent degrees should apply to both programs as early as possible so that they can obtain their admission status for each program in a timely fashion. The admission requirements for each degree apply. Students applying for concurrent degrees should indicate their intent on the application.

Application Deadlines
The MPH Program offers rolling admission for all MPH students except MD/MPH students.

The application deadlines are as follows:

Summer Semester: February 15th
Fall Semester: April 15th
Spring Semester: October 15th

MD/MPH students are accepted in the Summer Semester only.
The application deadline for MD/MPH applicants is May 15th.

Transfer Credits
The maximum number of credits from other institutions that can be transferred into this MPH degree program is six (6) credits. Courses taken at other institutions must be approved by the Program Director. Courses used towards a prior degree cannot be transferred.

Notification of Status
You will be notified of your status in writing. If you are accepted for admission into the MPH program, you are required to reserve your place in the class by submitting a $50 deposit that will be applied toward the first semester’s tuition. The deposit is refundable until May 1, and is non-refundable after that date.

Health Clearance Policy
Accepted students are required to submit completed health forms to the Student Health Service prior to the start of classes. In addition, official, final transcripts from all colleges and universities attended must by submitted to the Office of Admissions prior to the start of classes.

Deferrals
If accepted, you may request a deferral for one year in order to participate in educational activities or social service projects. Requests must be made in writing and submitted to the Director of Admissions by May 1. No extensions beyond the one-year deferral are permitted.

Re-applicants
Some “re-applicants” are admitted each year with improved credentials. Re-applicants should schedule a preadmission advisement appointment with the MPH Program Director or Deputy Director prior to June to discuss how to improve their credentials in a reapplication. Re-applicants must submit a new application form and fee, and submit at least one new letter of recommendation.
