Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics > Graduate Studies and Courses

GRADUATE TRAINING
The Department offers graduate training with emphasis on research in molecular biology, genetics, and immunology, in conjunction with the Interdepartmental Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Our students are well prepared for research and teaching careers in academia and the biotechnology industry. Courses cover fundamental aspects of molecular biology as well as specialized areas of research and data analysis. Regular presentations by faculty and students provide a stimulating atmosphere for the exchange of ideas. These efforts are supported by visiting lecturers from other institutions. Interaction between laboratories is encouraged in formal seminar series, as well as informal social gatherings. The graduate program provides an intellectually stimulating environment in which students are encouraged to present and discuss their work as an integral part of their graduate training.

Students select a departmental faculty member as mentor after completing the first year of graduate study, during which they rotate through their selection of 2-3 laboratories. The time of completion of the Ph.D. program is typically five years for Ph.D. students and 3-4 years for M.D./Ph.D. students. A list of graduate courses offered by the Department and by the Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology is given below. The Department is actively involved in a joint MS/Ph.D. program through a strategic initiative with
Brooklyn Polytechnic University. This program allows our students to interact with faculty and students who are working at the interface of biology and engineering.
