Standard 1:  MISSION, GOALS AND OBJECTIVES


CHARGE
Committee 7 will consider the following focus questions in its analysis of assessment of student learning. For each college the committee will:

Describe the congruence between the expectations of student learning in Downstate Medical Centers MD, MPH, PhD, MS and BS degree programs and the nation's standards for higher education in the disciplines of medicine, biomedical research, nursing and allied health professions. How do our expectations reflect the institution's missions and objectives in student learning in medicine, biomedical research, nursing and allied health?

Determine whether the measures of income and outcome assessment support a finding of effectiveness in the degree granting programs in the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Health Related Professions and the School of Graduate Studies. Are we meeting the standards of professional competencies?

Determine what assessment measures are in place to evaluate courses, student performance and teaching performance in the MD, MPH, PhD, MS and BS degree granting programs.

Determine how the assessments are being used in the four colleges to improve teaching, learning and basic professional skills development?

Determine how improved programmatic outcomes affect institutional planning and resource allocation for teaching and learning in the four colleges of Downstate Medical Center.

Determine what curricula are currently in place to develop life-long learning skills in the four colleges of Downstate Medical Center.

Determine whether students in COM are prepared for the new national clinical assessment test?

Determine how the assessment of the capstone curriculum in the new MPH program is used to improve the educational and professional experience of MPH students.

Determine how the Accelerated BS in Nursing Program plans to track its graduate's outcome relative to more traditional nursing programs.

Determine how CHRP is going to alter its program offerings to accommodate the new requirements for MS degrees in the Allied Health Professions.

Determine how the current time to degree in the PhD programs in School of Graduate Studies compares to national norms and to the prior experience in this institution?
