CHARGE
Committee 6 will assess the relevance of the academic and clinical curricula in preparing students to meet evolving needs in the health care industry. The committee will consider our educational offerings and related educational activities relative to desired outcome. Specific questions to be answered are as follows:
Are our curricula offerings in allied health, nursing, graduate and medical education congruent with our mission to educate, to conduct research and to provide quality patient care? Do the content and rigor of the educational offerings match the range of degrees offered, e.g., baccalaureate, masters, PhD and MD?
To what extent are the educational offerings evaluated as a component of the required specialty accreditations, e.g., LCME (Liaison Committee for Medical Education, CCNE (Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education)?
Describe how our educational offerings promote student use of information technology and learning resources.
In what way do the course syllabi incorporate expected learning outcomes?
Are the learning resources, facilities, instructional equipment, library services, and professional library staff adequate to support our educational programs?
How do we evaluate prior learning experience? If credit is given for prior academic learning/training, how do these policies differ across the four colleges and among the numerous programs of the institution? How do we inform students of the policies and how do we implement them?
How do the curricular policies and the procedures of the Accelerated BS in Nursing Program assure comparability with our traditional RN to BS program?
How do our graduate curricula in Nursing, Allied Health and in the Graduate School provide for the development of research and independent thinking?
What summer preparatory educational activities do we provide that establish a pipeline to facilitate admission to our medical graduate and allied health programs?
How do we insure that our certificate programs in Allied Health and Nursing e.g., Early Intervention OT, Midwifery, Post Masters in Family Nurse Practitioner, Women's Health Nurse Practitioner, and the courses included with them, should follow the institution's usual development, approval, review, and assessment processes?
How does SUNY Downstate Medical Center ensure that all students have college-level proficiency in general education as outlined in the Characteristics of Excellence in Higher Education?
