Standards : 8  & 9 STUDENT ADMISSIONS AND STUDENT                                  SUPPORT SERVICES


CHARGE
Committee 4 will embark on a comprehensive analysis of the admission policies, procedures and student support services across each college. The committee will consider the following specific questions.

How do we maintain admissions policies and standards that reflect the mission of the institution and that of each of its individual colleges with respect to educating and training the next generation of health care professionals and research biomedical scientists to serve the urban community in which Downstate Medical Center resides?

To what extent are we providing accurate and comprehensive information about our biomedical science, nursing and health professional programs to prospective students and the prerequisites for admission to those academic programs?

How do we inform our potential students about our outcome assessments?

How do we inform our applicants and enrolled students about financial aid?

In what ways do our admission and selection criteria contribute to the high retention rate of students at Downstate Medical Center?

What strategies are employed to evaluate the characteristics of student success such as persistence to graduation, obtaining postdoctoral appointments, residencies, and employment and serving the health care needs of Brooklyn and Staten Island?

How does the integrated student support program at Downstate Medical Center relate to the institutional mission, its academic focus and to the needs and strengths of its diverse student body?

What types of qualified professionals are on staff to provide student support services or to make referrals in areas of need?

What are the advisement procedures? Are they adequate and in what ways do they meet the unique needs of the diverse Downstate Medical Center student body?

How does student affairs support and enhance the academic mission?

What kinds of policies and procedures have been developed and implemented to secure and maintain student records?

What are the procedures for addressing student complaints and grievances?

Describe Downstate Medical Center's ongoing assessment of student support services and how the results are utilized for improvement.
