Weight Loss and Clinical Aspects of Low Carbohydrate Diets
Eric C. Westman, MD MHS
(Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC)

When overweight or obese individuals who are motivated to lose weight are instructed to limit carbohydrate intake, they experience reductions in body weight, fasting serum triglycerides, and an elevation in high density lipoprotein cholesterol. Most of the findings related to low carbohydrate diets are counterintiutive given current medical and scientific paradigms. Dr. Westman will review the clinical history of the use of low carbohydrate diets emphasizing results from clinicians who are currently using this type of diet, and suggest a metabolic framework of low carbohydrate diets for further study and refinement.
