Confidential Contacts for Criticisms or Complaints

SUNY Downstate is committed to provide residents with secure opportunities to express criticism or complaint on any subject or circumstance without fear of intimidation or retaliation.  The following persons have been designated contacts for issues and concerns that a resident may wish to be treated in strict confidence:

Chair of the GME Committee, Alan Shalita, M.D., Chair of the GME Committee and Chair & Distinguished Teaching Professor Department of Dermatology: 718-270-1229.

Associate Dean for GME, George Frangos, Ph.D. serves as an ombudsman accessible to all residents:  GME Office, Room 2-70 in the Basic Science Building, 450 Clarkson Ave. 718-270-1984.  Affirmative Action Officer, Adriana Conde-Billy, 270-1731.

The office serves as a resource to residents and faculty in the following areas:

Internal Review of GME Programs -- administration of a regular schedule of peer evaluations of all training programs to assure compliance with RRC educational program requirements.

Resident Learning and Working conditions -- monitors adequacy of ancillary services at affiliated hospitals.

Resident Evaluation and Due Process -- provides guidance and assistance to programs, residents and faculty on due process procedures

Counseling and Other Resident Support Services -- provides confidential referral to counseling for academic or personal problems, including substance abuse.

Credentialing -- certification of each resident's required credentials (diplomas, transcripts, visas, etc.), and their placement in a permanent file.

Privileging -- administration of SUNY Downstate privileging system that records and tracks all clinical procedures required for granting hospital privilege.

Rotation Schedules -- collects, maintains and distributes resident rotation schedules to affiliated hospitals.

Resident Contracts -- administration of unified SUNY Downstate Resident contracts with educational program and with designated affiliate training site.

Visa Sponsorship -- provides applications for J-1 sponsorship and advises and assists residents on visa issues.

ID Cards – Issue Universal ID cards which give resident access to medical library, internet, etc.
