CANCER RESEARCH: Research in the Department of Biochemistry examines the fundamental differences between controlled, compensatory growth and growth which has escaped from normal control--tumorigenesis.

in cardiac muscle tissue will contribute to our knowledge of pathologic heart enlargement and may provide insights into novel therapeutic intervention for hypertension and congestive heart failure.

DRUG DELIVERY RESEARCH: Small molecule carriers, such as carnitine and taurine as being studied for the selective delivery of therapeutic agents to tissues such as skeletal muscle to treat muscular dystrophy and other muscle wasting diseases or to the central nervous system for a variety of neurodegenerative disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, hearing loss, retinal degeneration, and myasthenia gravis.

NUTRITION/METABOLISM RESEARCH: In collaboration with clinicians, studies examining diet composition and energy balance are being conducted on resting metabolism and the effect of diet on obesity, diabetes, cancer, and sleep disorders. Findings are being integrated into an annual national symposium, the inaugural conference took place in June 2004.

PAIN PERCEPTION RESEARCH: Our research raises hope that it may be possible to relieve pain and avoid tolerance by using novel "chimeric molecules," created by chemically combining two substances normally found in the central nervous system. There is also ongoing research into the action of pregnancy hormones in interfering with the pathways that relay pain messages to the brain.
