The Department of Biomedical Communications is able to offer a number of enabling technologies in meeting the Center's programmatic needs for distance education.

Downstate Medical Center has become the focal point for satellite-delivered educational programs in Brooklyn. With our steerable Ku and C band satellite dish and video distribution system, we are able to receive live teleconferences from anywhere in our hemisphere and transmit them throughout the Downstate campus.

Our SUNYSAT satellite dish enables the reception of teleconferences from SUNYCentral in Albany, many state and governmental agencies, as well as access to a wide variety of distance learning programs and special events.

We are able to support synchronous ("real time") interactive communication, as well as asynchronous (Web based, "on demand") communication. Our system supports the industry standards and is highly flexible in adapting to different videoconferencing situations. Our system allows participants to share information using a variety of communication tools - document camera, videotape playback, robotic and voice activated cameras, slide projection, satellite reception and p.c. All images from any source can be previewed and annotated.

Through a "bridging" service, we are able to interact with several remote sites concurrently.
