ADULT NEUROLOGY TRAINING

Residency in Adult Neurology at SUNY Downstate offers the opportunity to train in a variety of settings with leaders in the field. The three-year program, directed by Dr. Lisa Merlin, is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). On completion, residents are eligible to sit for certification in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).

Applicants must have at least one year of ACGME-approved, post-graduate internal medicine training in the United States prior to entering the neurology program. All adult neurology training positions are negotiated through the Neurology Matching Program. Residents rotate through neurology wards, consultation services, outpatient clinics, and electives. While on pediatric neurology rotations, adult neurology residents participate fully in the pediatric inpatient and outpatient services. Ample time is allowed for electives in cerebrovascular disease, clinical neurophysiology, neuro-ophthalmology, neuropathology, neuroradiology, or individual clinical or research electives may be designed.

Inpatient Experience
With a large municipal hospital, a tertiary-care referral center, and community hospitals comprising the teaching environment, residents are exposed to a wide spectrum of pathology in diverse settings. Throughout all rotations, intensive attending teaching and supervision is provided, with progressively more autonomy given as the resident's fund of knowledge increases.

Ward service -- teams consist of an attending neurologist, a senior resident, junior residents, and medical students. Daily rounds include morning report, attending teaching rounds, and sign-out rounds.

Consultation service -- teams consist of an attending neurologist, senior residents, junior residents, and medical students. The consultation service comprises a significant part of the inpatient training where the full gamut of systemic causes of neurologic disease, trauma, surgically-related neurological disease, and obstetrical complications are encountered.

Specialty inpatient units -- include epilepsy monitoring, neurology intensive care, and stroke units.

Outpatient Experience
In adult neurology continuity clinics, residents get the opportunity to follow the progress of neurological diseases over three years. Pediatric and specialty clinics offer targeted clinical exposure when on specific rotations. One month is spent on an ambulatory care rotation.

Teaching Program
Academic neurologic teaching is highlighted by weekly Grand Rounds featuring nationally recognized clinicians and researchers. There are also weekly to monthly teaching conferences in electrophysiology, epilepsy, ethics, neuromuscular disease, neuro-ophthalmology, neuropathology, and neuroradiology. A journal club meets weekly to discuss current papers and Director's Rounds are held bi-monthly for patient presentations. Preparation for the neurology board examination includes basic neuroscience lectures, practice for the oral and written portions, and in-service examinations.
