CANCER REGISTRY
CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The Cancer Registry Certificate Program is a 14-month course of study designed to prepare the student with the fundamental skills to perform all functions in the Cancer Registry environment. Classes are offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm on the Downstate campus, 395 Lenox Road, Brooklyn, New York.
To earn a certificate, students must achieve an average of 65 in all courses and examinations.
Attendance at 80% of the classes is also a requirement for satisfactory completion of the program.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must have a good command of the English Language, and must be a high school graduate/ GED with basic typing or computer skills
The selection process for admission to the program includes:

• Written essay
• Basic aptitude test
• Two letters of reference

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
cMEDICAL TERMINOLOGY I & II
The course introduces the technical language of medicine through word construction utilizing root, prefix, suffix and combinations. This course will give the student a working knowledge of disease, clinical procedure terms, diagnostic terms, including signs, & symptoms.
ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY I & II
A review of body systems will include the respiratory, circulatory skeletal and muscular, nervous, urinary, reproductive, integumentary, and endocrine systems.
BASIC MEDICAL BIOLOGY
A basic understanding of the characteristics of cell biology, neoplasm & other disease will be provided.
HEALTH INFORMATION & DATA MANAGEMENT
This course will provide a comprehensive understanding in the practices of Medical Record maintenance. The areas of patient record content, record retention, release of information, legal and ethical aspects of cancer data, HIPAA, risk management and quality improvement methods will all be presented.
CANCER REGISTRY OPERATIONS & MANAGEMENT
This course involves a study of the principles and practice of Cancer Registry operations. Training will include data collection, abstracting, case finding, file maintenance, follow-up, patient outcomes, reporting requirements, and ACOS standards & regulatory requirements, quality control, preparing annual reports, data utilization, and legal requirements within the cancer registry.
DISEASE PROCESS /TREATMENT
A study of benign and malignant disease characteristics and histological type will be presented along with abbreviations, symbols and acronyms, and cancer treatment options will be introduced.
ICD-9-CM CODING/ICD-0-3 CODING
ICD-9-CM coding conventions will be explained in detail. Students will learn the basic concepts of diagnostic and procedural coding, as well as the coding of neoplasm’s using ICD-03 Coding with International Classification of Disease for Oncology.
EPIDEMIOLOGY/STATISTICS/COMPUTER USAGE
A study in the distribution of disease within a population, search for determinants of disease as it relates to cancer. Students will learn to perform data analysis, presentation, analysis and preparation of cancer survival statistics. An introduction to basic computer principles and Cancer Registry Software will be provided.
DISEASE STAGING
This course will further develop the students understanding of AJCC-TNM Staging. It will explore the concepts, differences & methodology of SEER & AJCC Staging, as well as the terminology used in pathology, cytology & other data source reports.
CLINICAL INTERNSHIP
Students who are not currently employed in a Cancer Registry will be required to complete 160 hours of clinical internship experience in an approved ACOS Cancer Registry. Those students who currently work in an approved Cancer Registry can complete their clinical internship in their work place.
